Baby Baby Baby Gee Gee Gee

Ever since four-four tipped me off to this song last week I have been completely obsessed. From what I can gather Girls Generation is a Korean pop group that is really more of a dance team than any sort of band. There are nine of them. NINE! I could barely keep the spice girls straight and there were only four of them (Five? Four? It changed). Seriously, how do you keep any sort of band unity with that many people? Thats like the cast of real world. (OH MY GOD PLEASE RELEASE "GIRLS GENERATION THE REALITY SHOW!")
Regardless they are completely amazing, from their jaunty hats to their interactive black board to their knocking-as-dance-move. I have no idea what the song is about. I'm guessing boys. I mean, what else do girls sing about?

In my next life can I be a Korean pop star?

Casual Racism in the New York Times.

An article about an Italian tourist who was deported contained this precious line.
“They were pretty shocked that the government could do this sort of thing, because it doesn’t happen that often, except to people you never hear about, like Haitians and Guatemalans.”
This line is left in at face value. Its not explained or expanded upon. The article never goes into what it's like to be a Haitian tourist. Its all about what a scandal it is that white people are being deported.
Its absolutely disgusting.

Gawker on the weekend is extra nerdtastic

So no one in their right mind goes on gawker on the weekend unless they are avoiding writing their thesis. And lo and behold the gawker writer for the weekends is a giant nerd. He watches BSG drunk. He posts a video of a cat playing a thermin. But most importantly he spends his time hunting down compilation videos of Buffy's sixth season (the best one) set to music that people put on youtube. Why? Because he can apparently. He even made a list.
"Here are a bunch of videos setting Willow's brief-but-hot time as a psycho-sweet baddie on Buffy the Vampire Slayer to various forms of gloomy pop music. This first one's extra screechy!"
No. Joke.

Who was it who said time is money? Ah yes. Ben Franklin. I listen to you not.

what did I do with out the internet?

The internet has been out at my home which is why the posts here have not been as frequent this past week. Apologies.
When you can only get on the internet for about 5 minuets at a time it makes you realize what your internet priorities are (as opposed to when I should be working on my play and then I will read EVERYTHING THAT HAS EVER BEEN POSTED. EVER) My internet priorities are:
1. Email. Duh.
2. Livejournal friends list and the blogs of Sushi, Theresa, Emily, and Slaney.
3. facebook. I am having my ass kicked in 3 different scrabbulious games. I don’t actually care if you changed your profile picture.
4. Icanhascheezburger. Yup. That’s what I miss when I don’t have the internet.

What actually was surprised about is how little I care about gawker, jezebel, and gothamist when I'm not procrastinating or at work.

Read this piece by Chuck Isherwood and then this response by Jon Robin Baitz.
There are a lot of things that are slowly driving me away from the theatre. Chuck Isherwoods self rightiousness is definitly on that list.

Two articles about people who love (too much) animals.

People want to kill pigeons or cats, and other people are very very very offended by this. Offended to the point of calling it a Holocaust or fascism. I'm all for pigeons and cats but really? Holocaust? really?

Salon dot com

There was a period of my life where I read a lot of salon.com. This was back in high school before salon had changed editors, and before they made people subscribe. At that time Salon was a lot trashier with lots of articles about sex and prostitution and also more coverage of the arts. Now its mostly super serious political analysis and therefore a lot less fun. I still check back once a week or so to read the tv reviews though. When I do, I usually skim what they published the past week, just in case there was something interesting.
This week I was rewarded.
This article is a review comparing Susan Faludi's new book and Bruce Springsteen's new album. Both are about the way America has reacted to 9/11, Faludi focuses on backlashes against feminism, Springsteen's is more general.
Its a pretty amazing review. Go. Read.

Tom Cruse and the bordom of Larke

Other people do not update their blogs/livejournals enough. I need to be entertained, people! (and as we all know, the world revolves around me) I don’t think people quite understand just how much time a day I spend in front of a computer. Staring at an empty screen waiting…waiting… for something amusing to catch my eye. You think I do this out of personal choice but my job needs me, nay requires me to sit here, in front of a computer, hour after hour. It’s enough to drive a poor girl mad. Have a little sympathy guys! What, do you want me to read a book or something? Ew!
Speaking of books: I recommended Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to my brother and he actually sounded like he might be interested (exclamation point to the extreme). I mean, he could be acting but he at least pretended that he was writing it down. Some of you may recall the Christmas debacle a few years back when I bought him summerland, the once and future king, dune, and I robot (all good books he should read) and the day right after Christmas he returned them ALL. This was then followed by his birthday when I bought him the same books and then WROTE on the inside covers of all of them why I thought he should read them, making them impossible to return. I’m surprised our relationship ever recovered (actually come to think of it, maybe his feigned interest was a peace offering, I suppose that means I need to feign interest in D&D.)
While I was sitting at work, NOT reading my friends blogs, I actually stumbled across this quite fascinating article on celebrity as a mental disorder. http://www.newyorkmag.com/nymetro/news/culture/features/12264/
“Stars are not just like us. According to researchers, celebrities are four times as likely to commit suicide as noncelebrities and live, on average, thirteen years less than Joe and Jane Sixpack. Celebrities may receive substandard treatment at hospitals, victims of deferred medical tests or competition between surgeons for the honor of operating on a celebrity. Celebrities may experience more insomnia, migraines, and irritable-bowel syndrome. Celebrities are twice as likely to develop a serious alcohol problem.”
Poor celebritys. I feel bad for them!
