Casual Racism in the New York Times.

An article about an Italian tourist who was deported contained this precious line.
“They were pretty shocked that the government could do this sort of thing, because it doesn’t happen that often, except to people you never hear about, like Haitians and Guatemalans.”
This line is left in at face value. Its not explained or expanded upon. The article never goes into what it's like to be a Haitian tourist. Its all about what a scandal it is that white people are being deported.
Its absolutely disgusting.

Huh. You know, to play devil's advocate-- I read that article, and I actually took that comment to be more like "we never even HEAR about this usually," like we shouldn't be shocked to hear about it because it unfortunately happens all the time, not that he thinks it's okay that it happens to Haitians and Guatemalans. It's just true that the media usually doesn't focus on the grievances of non-white people-- and actually sheds light on the article itself, which makes a big hubbub about the white European but fails to mention other nationalities. That quote is the least racist thing in there.
